Intentional design

Design philosophy

We believe in the power of simplicity, but it should never be boring. Every HENK design originates from architectural simplicity: a strong foundation, refined until nothing more is needed. We don't believe in fleeting trends or an abundance of transient accessories. Our collection consists purely of the fundamental furniture that underpins a space—from dining tables and dining chairs to sofas and cabinets.

Each piece is designed in-house and manufactured with the highest quality. No compromises in craftsmanship, no concessions in character. The result is an ongoing collection that brings tranquility to a world full of visual noise.

Sustainable Design Principles

Design process

We work as much as possible according to circular design principles. For example, we use modular elements that are easy to assemble and disassemble, allowing for simple repairs. Each piece of furniture can be customized to meet the specific needs of the customer and their interior, ensuring the furniture stays in use longer. This also allows us to work to order, avoiding excess stock.

Local craftsmanship

Production largely takes place in the Netherlands, always in Europe.

Made to order
We produce to order, which avoids excess stock and unnecessary waste of raw materials.

Locally produced
Our entire collection is produced within Europe, with a large part even in the Netherlands. This reduces transport emissions.

Code of Conduct
All our suppliers have signed the Studio HENK Code of Conduct. We work closely with them to also increase the sustainability of their production processes. For example, we look at their waste policy, material selection, working conditions, and the use of green energy.

Designed for efficient transportation

All our rectangular tables are designed to fit into flat packaging. This reduces cardboard usage and makes transport more efficient. More and more furniture is designed for flat-pack delivery.

Checker Dining Chair
The Checker dining chair is the first HENK dining chair to be entirely flat-packed. Made from solid wood, the chair consists of 4 parts that can be easily assembled.

Column Cabinet
The shelves of the Column Cabinet slide into each other and are secured with wooden wedges. This means no steel is used in the design, and it can be transported flat.

Transport

Flat packing
When packaging our products, we want to minimize the use of raw materials. That is why all our tables (except for some frames of our round tables) are designed to fit into flat-pack packaging. This way, less cardboard is used and transport is more efficient. Many of our other furniture items, such as chairs, are also flat-packed.

Certified cardboard
We try to keep the impact of our cardboard packaging as low as possible. That is why, since 2020, we only use cardboard for our packaging that is 100% FSC certified.

Reduction of plastic
In the furniture industry, plastic is a widely used and effective method to protect products during transport. Because we go beyond the standard, we are constantly looking for more sustainable solutions: for example, we have replaced the plastic corner profiles and protective edges with cardboard alternatives. We have also replaced the styrofoam sheets, which protect the surface, with cardboard sheets that contain only a thin layer of polystyrene to absorb impacts. Our next goal is to replace this last bit of plastic with cardboard 'honeycomb' inserts.
