Advice and Maintenance for Upholstered Furniture

The lifespan of upholstery fabric depends on the type of fabric and the environment in which the furniture is located. Consider, for example, exposure to sunlight, humidity, or intensive use. By following the correct maintenance instructions, the fabric will remain in good condition for as long as possible. Below you will find specific advice for each type of fabric.

General advice

Pilling

Pilling is the accumulation of fibres, caused by household dust or contact with clothing, cushions or throws. Pilling is to be expected with normal use of the furniture, but can often be prevented and remedied.

Advice: Regular vacuuming of the furniture can prevent pilling. Unexpected pilling can be removed with commercially available pill removers/lint shavers.

Sensitivity to moisture and light

Upholstered furniture is susceptible to environmental factors such as light, moisture, and heat. Following the advice below can help minimize damage.

Discoloration: Discoloration is a normal phenomenon with upholstered furniture. Fabrics can fade due to exposure to daylight or sunlight and friction. The lightfastness (which has a score from 1 (worst) to 8 (best)) of the fabrics we use can be consulted in our stores. Upholstery typically scores no higher than 7, and will therefore always show some discoloration.

Advice: Avoid direct sunlight or use curtains or UV filters to limit discoloration.

Moisture and stains: Contact with liquids or oil can lead to stains or damage to the fabric.

Advice: Use impregnating agents for temporary

Foam and suspension settling

Foam and filling: The furniture is filled with high-quality foams that provide long-lasting comfort and support. The foam may lose some of its volume over time due to normal use, which is inherent to the material. With intensive use, this can even eventually lead to a permanent loss of about 10 to 15%.

Advice: Smooth the fabric after use and avoid prolonged sitting in the same spots.

Suspension: Studio HENK uses high-quality suspension that ensures long-lasting firm seating comfort. However, intensive use can lead to slight "sagging."

Advice: Regularly smooth the fabric and plump up the furniture, for example, when you get up or during vacuuming, to keep the filling in good shape. Also, avoid prolonged sitting in the same spots and try to distribute the load on the furniture as evenly as possible.

Creasing

Studio HENK's upholstered furniture is made with high-quality materials that ensure comfort, appearance, and durability. However, fabrics are susceptible to external influences and will react to daily use over time. By following the advice below, damage can be limited.

Stretching and creasing: Fabrics have a natural stretch, which provides comfort and adapts to use. In addition, the upholstery, especially with softer filling, is not stretched maximally tight on the furniture. This is because the furniture must offer comfort and be suitable for tension on the fabrics when sat upon. Furthermore, the fabric or a seam could tear if stretched more tightly, as can happen with an item of clothing.

This can also lead to creasing, the extent of which depends on the intensity of use and the type of fabric.

Advice: Smooth the fabric regularly and plump up the furniture, for example, when you get up or while vacuuming, to keep the fabric in good shape. Also, avoid sitting in the same spots for long periods and try to distribute the load on the furniture as evenly as possible.

Maintenance advice wool fabrics

Wool is naturally dirt-repellent. We advise against impregnating it, as this may affect its natural properties. Fortunately, the outer layers of the wool fibers have a certain degree of water repellency, which means moisture is absorbed less quickly and you can easily remove (moisture) stains.

Care advice for synthetic fabrics

Synthetic fabrics are not inherently dirt and water-repellent. It is therefore advisable to impregnate the furniture using the Service Plan Plus.
