Oak advice and maintenance

Wood is a natural product and reacts to environmental influences. Cracks, splits, and warping of wood are caused by the environment in which the product is located. By following the advice below, damage from environmental influences can be limited.

General advice

Humidity and temperature

Fluctuations in humidity and cold/heat will often lead to shrinking, expanding, warping, cracking or breaking; such fluctuations should be prevented. The relative humidity varies daily and depends on the weather conditions. However, it is essential to maintain a constant level of relative humidity in the room where the furniture is located.

Advice:

  • Keep the humidity in your home constant, preferably around 55%.
  • Regularly check the humidity with a hygrometer; these are often built into modern thermometers and heating devices.
  • If necessary, use humidifiers or dehumidifiers.
  • Keep the room temperature constant.
Sensitivity to moisture and light

Exposure to moisture or heat can cause moisture to get under the finish, or existing moisture in the wood to accumulate under the finish, leading to stains. Stains or rings can be the result of improper use.

Advice: Use coasters and placemats to prevent contact with moisture and heat, and immediately wipe up moisture stains with a dry cloth.

Wood can discolour due to exposure to direct sunlight.

Advice: Avoid direct sunlight or use curtains or UV filters to limit discolouration.

Expected signs of use

Certain wear and tear effects are inherent to wooden furniture and do not constitute a defect. Damage due to improper use can be partially prevented by following the advice below.

1. Scratches and wear
Scratches or wear marks in the wood finish are a normal consequence of furniture use. This cannot be entirely prevented but can be limited.
Advice: Use good protection, such as coasters, placemats, or a tablecloth.

2. Stains
Stains arise from moisture, heat, or corrosive substances and are beyond the control of Studio HENK.
Advice: Clean spilled liquids immediately with a dry cloth to prevent stains.

Beyond Studio HENK's control - not non-conformity
Fluctuations in humidity or temperature and exposure to light, moisture, heat, and humidity and temperature changes can be prevented by the customer and are therefore beyond the control of Studio HENK. Consequences thereof - such as scratches, wear marks, cracks, fissures, warping, rings, or stains - do not, therefore, lead to non-conformity of a product.

Maintenance instructions

For cleaning your oak furniture, we recommend the Osmo Spray-Cleaner. This spray contains a small amount of wax which nourishes the wood and prevents it from drying out. Use the Spray-Cleaner weekly or bi-weekly to clean the table.

  • Clean an oak table top with a slightly damp cloth and, if necessary, a mild soapy solution, and then dry it thoroughly.
  • If you only clean the wood with water, there is a chance that the wood will dry out and therefore become less attractive.
  • Avoid corrosive cleaners or aggressive substances that can damage the finish.
  • Never use abrasive maintenance products. Wax-containing products are also strongly discouraged.
Refresher instructions

After some time, depending on the intensity of use and cleaning, your furniture will need a refresh. We recommend using Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner for this purpose. This product is suitable for removing greasy stains, for example, and for refreshing and maintaining surfaces treated with Osmo Hardwax Oil.

  • Easy to apply and economical to use (recommendation: 2 teaspoons per m2).
  • Make sure the table is clean and follow the instructions on the packaging.
  • Wipe until the greasy film has disappeared.

Please make sure you order the correct color, 3029 (clear).

Thorough maintenance

If over time you notice clear signs of use on your table, such as faded spots or prominent scratches, or if your table is visibly damaged, then it's time for a thorough maintenance. You can follow the instructions below for this.

Requirements
  • Sanding paper (machine) P120

Oak hardwax oil natural (3062)

Oak hardwax oil natural light (3041)

1. Preparation

a. Sand the table evenly by machine with P120 grit. Ensure that all existing finish layers are completely removed.

b. Begin by stirring the Osmo Hardwax oil thoroughly for two minutes. After opening the can, the oil and wax will have separated. Always perform a test on the surface first to see if the result has the desired effect.

2. Apply first coat

a. Please note: the instructions for this step differ for the natural or natural light finish!

A. Hardwax natural: Apply a thin first coat of Osmo Hardwax-Oil 3062 with an Osmo Microfiber Roller to the new or sanded wood. Roll the product out well. Always apply along the boards and with the wood grain.

B. Hardwax natural light: Apply the first coat of Osmo Hardwax-Oil 3041 by rubbing it in with a lint-free cloth on the sanded wood. Do this with the wood grain.

b. Within 20 minutes, buff the Osmo Hardwax-Oil dry with a lint-free cloth. Do this also with the wood grain. This ensures an even appearance and prevents too much product from being applied.

c. Errors made during application can be corrected on the wet surface up to 30 minutes after application. This includes roller marks or brush hairs.

d. The drying of the first coat takes approximately 8-10 hours (at 23 degrees Celsius and 50% relative humidity). At lower temperatures or higher humidity, drying takes longer. Good ventilation must be ensured at all times. Therefore, make sure that windows and doors are open.

3. Apply second coat

a. Lightly but thoroughly sand the surface by hand with 240 grit sandpaper between coats, after drying.

b. Remove dust from the surface before applying the next coat.

c. Apply a second finishing coat of Osmo Polyx-Oil 3062 with an Osmo Microfibre Roller (see step 2a). Allow this coat to dry for 8-10 hours.

4. Apply a third coat

a. Apply the final, third, finishing coat of Osmo Hardwax Oil 3062 (see step 2a). Allow this coat to dry for 8-10 hours as well.

Advice on paint and stain

Recommended cleaning products

Both the varnish and stain finishes are completed with a topcoat. No special cleaning agents are required for lacquered finishes. A damp cloth with water or a regular cleaning agent is sufficient.

Maintenance instructions

Wood with a lacquer finish can be cleaned with a damp cloth and then wiped dry with a dry cloth.

  • Grease stains can be removed by using a little soap.
  • Avoid corrosive cleaners or aggressive substances that may damage the finish.
  • Never use abrasive cleaning agents. Wax-containing agents are also strongly discouraged.
Repair scratches

A lacquer is a low-maintenance finish but is more susceptible to scratches.

Unlike a hardwax oil finish, it is not (easily) possible to repair scratches and other damage to a lacquer finish.
