HENK bezoekt Marlot Willems
In the 'HENK Visits' series, we visit people who inspire us to give you a glimpse into their daily lives at home. This time, we pay a visit to interior stylist Marlot Willems.
Marlot, known as Jolielot on Instagram, lives with her partner, children, and dog in a quiet village. Their home, decorated with neutral tones and Parisian charm, radiates tranquility. She passionately shares her love for interior design and styling with her followers, inspiring everyone who appreciates a classic, modern style.
What sparked your love and passion for interior design, and how has this passion evolved over the years?
It seems like this was ingrained in me from childhood. Instead of playing house, I preferred to rearrange furniture. I always dreamed away with home magazines and loved peeking into everyone's homes to form my opinion. Extensive travel also certainly fueled my love for interiors through the different architectures I encountered along the way.
What are the key characteristics that define your personal style?
I think my style can best be described as classic with a modern twist. I love neutral colors, but I always make sure the overall look is never boring.
How would you describe the atmosphere you aim to create in your home?
This is always a difficult question, but tranquility is central in our home. My partner and I can sometimes be chaotic, and with two children, a peaceful environment is essential for our relaxation. As much as I love color, you won't quickly find it in our home. Moreover, our house is still far from finished; it still feels like an unfinished canvas. But peace and coziness are the atmospheres I want to create in our home.
How do you stay updated on the latest trends and developments in the world of interior and design? And how do you distinguish yourself from others?
My Instagram algorithm is really great right now, haha! I follow many artists and other creative minds. Additionally, I regularly collect coffee table books by interior designers. Every now and then, I flip through them when I have a moment to myself.
Why did you choose the Elements coffee table for your interior?
I find the elongated shape truly beautiful in our space, and it seems like it was made especially for us. The slats give it a playful look, and I'm completely in love with the color!
What advice would you give young creatives focusing on design and interiors?
In a world where we are constantly exposed to stimuli, it can sometimes be difficult to discover your own style. Unconsciously, we are influenced by endless scrolling on social media. But it is important to search for your own taste and be proud of it. By embracing your own style, you distinguish yourself from others. Dare to be authentic and show who you are. That's what makes you unique.
