HENK at home with Anouk Yve
Anouk lives in a modern villa near Groningen with her husband Jos and their two children. Her house radiates an oasis of tranquility upon entering, thanks to its neutral color palette and minimalist yet warm decor. Large windows on both sides of the house effortlessly connect the indoors with the outdoors, which is important to Anouk. We spoke to her about her love for interior design, where she draws inspiration for her own creations, and her favorite spot in the house. How would you describe your interior style?
Warm, a mix between mid-century modern design and new, outdoors meets indoors. I find an interior truly exciting when you can see it’s lived-in, by seeking a mix of old design pieces and contemporary comfort. For me, the personality of an interior lies in the details. Throughout our house, you’ll find unique objects, created, purchased, and collected by me. Together, they form our story, a place where everyone in the family feels at home.
You also design furniture for your interior; what inspires you?
Nature, it’s a source of inspiration for almost everything I do. It was also the starting point for the construction of our home. By looking outside, we knew exactly where we wanted to cook: on a higher level so we could overlook the lake. Additionally, we wanted a lower level to serve as a kind of cocoon, surrounded by the garden. Nature is whimsical and beautiful in every season. Recently, I was on a press trip in Marrakech where I caught myself taking photos of beautiful plants, because I was obsessed with the shape of the leaf compared to the stem. I find imperfect shapes beautiful, interesting, and full of depth.
What are you most proud of in your home?
The large hall: it's the heart of our home. In the ridge, seven meters high, there is a small mezzanine where daylight reflects beautifully and from where you can see the moon shine at night.
What is important to you when purchasing a new piece of furniture?
Comfort and how the item fits into the story of the rest of our interior.
You have the Elements Outdoor Lounge in your garden. Why did you choose this design?
The Elements Outdoor Lounge has a brutalist feel. It's a rather masculine composition, yet graceful due to the round cushions. It feels like an extension of our indoor interior, and that feels good. Normally, we try to bring the outside in through material choices and form; now we're bringing the inside out, completing the circle.
