HENK at home with Matthias Geerts
In the series 'HENK at home,' we visit people who inspire us to give you a glimpse into their daily home lives. This time, we visit Matthias Geerts, DJ, producer, and fashion influencer.
Matthias Geerts lives in a 1970s house in the vibrant center of Antwerp, Belgium. He travels the world for his work, both as a DJ and in fashion. We visited him to talk about his love for fashion, his all-round work, and what it's like to be home during busy periods.Â
Matthias, you have a great love for fashion, what inspires you?
I always find this question difficult to answer because I also feel like it changes constantly. What I find inspiring in fashion is that you can easily express your personality with the clothes you wear. This can be in different colors, but also in shapes and cuts. Traveling, music, and fashion weeks inspire me the most. Seeing what designers bring, but also what others in the industry wear on the streets, gives me inspiration. Music is also a daily source of inspiration for me; what I listen to and produce is a reflection of what I wear. When traveling for holidays and work, you always see different things that you don't see at home; when I visit other countries and cultures, I feel that my creativity and inspiration are greatly nourished. I love putting an outfit together; this often happens without me having to think about it. If you have a few good basics in your closet, you can create infinitely many nice combinations with newer or recently acquired items from a vintage clothing store, and it's the same with interior design.
You do so much, you travel a lot for your work, and we see you in many places. What are you most proud of?
Sharing and "being open" to my followers is something I've been doing for a very long time. When I sometimes pause to think about it, it seems so strange to me. I am proud of that, but also of how it has shaped my life and the people I have met along the way. Many of my best friends come from this industry, and that's special. Additionally, I am immensely proud of the opportunities I have received from various fashion houses to collaborate with me. This has allowed me to build wonderful relationships.Â
How do we see your style and taste reflected in your interior?
I like dark outfits, but with a striking color as an accent; for example, a black or dark brown outfit with a bit of color or striking accessories so that it stands out a little more than an ordinary black look. I feel like these kinds of outfits are my thing, and when I look at my interior, this is somewhat reflected. If you look at my dining table, for example, dark wood with a striking blue seat, I find this very bold. And then my coffee table, elegant but with a black-and-white checkered rug and a striking colored sofa behind it, which makes it very groovy.
When you're away a lot, it's nice to come home. What's your favorite place in the house?
My favorite place is the living area; this might sound cliché, but this is truly the space where everyone is most relaxed and you can take the time to unwind. I think of evenings after work, whether with your partner or alone, taking some time for yourself to watch your favorite book or show. And also, when I have guests over and we have a drink together, this is where it happens. But the dining area also has its charms, as my favorite moment of the day is breakfast. Starting the day together with eggs for breakfast, a warm coffee, and a juice; that is heavenly for me.
You chose the Column Quadpod table and the Oblique chairs, among others. Why?
I found the Column Quadpod incredibly bold and sturdy; the solid leg and the beautifully smoothly finished top were the perfect combination for a stylish choice that still added strong character and self-worth to my living room. Since my living room, dining area, and kitchen form one space, I wanted to complement the colored sofa I already had with a bright blue fabric on the Oblique chairs with a dark wood choice.
Matthias Geerts' Oblique chairs are upholstered in Tonus4 fabric, 631. The Column Quadpod dining table is made of Smoked Oak. Design your own table.
