HENK at Home with Abderrahmane Trabsini
In the 'HENK at home' series, we visit people who inspire us to give you a glimpse into their daily lives at home. This time, we visit Abderrahmane Trabsini, co-founder of the fashion label Daily Paper.
Abderrahmane lives in a colorful apartment in Amsterdam-West. His home is a perfect reflection of his personality: an eclectic mix of sleek design, anime, and art by artists like Satoru Koizumi and Murakami. We spoke to him about his love for Japan, art, and his favorite spots in the house.
How would you describe your interior style?
“I always call it organized chaos. Or an organized toy store. The base must primarily be neutral and minimalist. I’ve lived in hotels a bit too much, which makes me appreciate everything being neatly tucked away and sleek. This solid base serves as a backdrop for my various collections. For example, the cabinet in my living room holds all my special records, magazines, and artworks. I collect art from artists and collectibles; I’ve bought a lot through my friends at Avant Arte. My home is a reflection of who I am: calm but also an avid collector.”
How important is your home to you?
“Very important. It’s all about a zen vibe. I think the balance between home and work needs to be healthy. My job as co-founder and design director of Daily Paper (a popular Dutch fashion brand, ed.) is a lot of fun but also very busy. After a long day at work, I really look forward to going home and relaxing. At home, I can be myself and recharge.”
Where do you get inspiration for your interior?
“Mainly from Japan. I find everything about cities like Tokyo inspiring, from the packaging to the quality of the products there. Everything is so meticulously designed. Additionally, I also really love American branding. I'm a big fan of Disney and Looney Tunes. That playfulness is reflected, among other things, in the Astroboy artworks by KAWS and the vintage Disney figures I recently managed to acquire.”
What are you happy with in your interior?
“I will never get rid of the original Godfather posters I have hanging in the hallway. But also the rug I bought from Soufiane Zarib, a Moroccan carpet dealer with whom I have built a good relationship. I find the rugs he makes beautiful. They really add something unique to your interior and at the same time, it’s a nice nod to my own Moroccan roots. I am a proud Amsterdammer but I am also very happy with my bicultural background, that is truly a blessing for me.”
You also chose the Slot Coffee Table and the New Classic Bench from Studio HENK?
“Yes, I had been looking for a black table for a while and I like the shape of the Slot Coffee Table. It's really like an object in the living room. I chose the New Classic Bench because I was looking for a kind of Tokyo Bench, which I think is really cool. I like having a second seating area in my living room. I often sit there when I'm on the phone or want to get some inspiration: one of my favorite spots in the house.”
